Pilgrimage of Sainte Sarah in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer

SAINTES MARIES DE LA MER 2010-05-24 Gypsies carry a statue of Saint Marie-Jacob and Saint Marie-Salom to the sea in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the Camargue region of southern France. Over 10,000 Roma people take part in the annual pilgrimage of 'Saint Sarah' at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, in honour of the Roma patron saint Sara. Legend has it that she was a servant to the holy 'Three Marys' when they arrived in France after being persecuted in Palestine. Sarah, aka 'Sara the Black', is honoured on May 24th and 25th - statues are carried down to the sea on this day to re-enact her arrival in France.
