Pictured here is: Garnett Spears, Lacey Spears From outward appearances Lacey Spears looked to be the perfect mother. She seemed distraught when her only son Garnett became sick just weeks after being born. And she played the role of caring mother after taking him to over 20 different doctors in the first few years of his life in a bid to get him healthy. But looks can be deceiving and when Garnett died on January 23, 2014 at a hospital in NY, Lacey was soon facing murder charges. The cause of death was deemed to be high levels of sodium leading to swelling in his brain. During her son's life, Lacey documented what she said was her son's struggle with numerous illnesses on her blog and on Facebook. On March 2, 2015, a jury found Spears guilty of killing her son by poisoning him with table salt, which she had administered to him from infancy through his feeding tube Ð including the last time he was in the hospital. On April 8, 2015, a judge sentenced Spears to 20 years to life in prison for the death of her son. The judge in the case, Robert Neary, said that Lacey suffers from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, and therefore did not sentence her to 25 years in prison, the maximum possible sentence. In a prison interview after her sentencing Lacey, now 28, insisted she did not kill her son but she will not be eligible for parole until she is 46.
