GERMANY-ARCHAEOLOGY-RECONSTRUCTION-MILET

Visitors walk past the Market Gate of Miletus, an outstanding example of Roman architecture, on November 18, 2008 at the Collection of Classical Antiquities of the Pergamon museum in Berlin. A first reconstruction phase of the gate (2nd century A.D.) damaged during World War II was now completed after several years of work. The Market Gate of Miletus, which is almost 17 meters high and 29 meters wide, conveys a strong impression of the splendour of Roman cities in Asia Minor, among which Miletus (now situated in Turkey), as a trading centre, assumed a privileged role.
