New owner on the footplate of The Flying Scotsman Proud day for Nottinghamshire businessman Mr Alan Pegler - he's leaving King's Cross station , London , on the footplate of his new possession , the locomotive The Flying Scotsman . Because of the diesel programme, the loco has become redundant and today's run to Doncaster was her last . Mr Pegler bought her for £3,000 when he learned that British railways did not intend to preserve one of her class. He intends to stable her at Doncaster , where she was buildt in 1923 . The Flying Scotsman , a Gresley A3 Pacific , was the first steam engine officially to record a speed on 100mph.
