Aug. 08, 1963 - Searching for the Calf of Gold: The Couple in the picture, Mr. and Mrs. Orde-Powlett, are the owners of Old Basing House, Hampshire, once the second largest house in England, but razed to the ground by Oliver Cromwell's forces in 1645, during the Civil War. The story goes that then owner, the Marquess of Winchester, who was under siege by Cromwell, melted down his hoarded gold and had it shaped into a golden calf, and then buried. Mr. Orde-Powlett, who is a descendant of the Marquess is making a search for the calf, which if found, could be worth more than £3,000,000 and they will shortly be assisted by the Ministry of Works and a qualified archaeologist who will direct heavy mechanical digging equipment to lay bare the ruins.
