At 1:40 am on 26th April 1938 news photographer Ray Howard was driving up Fifth Avenue in New York. At the same time Prince Alexis Dawydoff, a member of old Russia's Imperial family, was driving down Fifth Avenue with two married women after a party. Suddenly the Prince's car jumped the kerb, crashed into a store front, killed one of the women and seriously injured the other. Hearing the crash Howard sped to the scene and took this picture. His publisher told him later "That was the greatest on spot-news picture I ever saw".
