King sends portrait of himself to England ' s oldest living gunner on 95th birthday . Lieutenant Colonel John Pawson , of Plumstead , London , South East received from the King an autographed portrait of himself and a congratulatory message ' the oldest living gunner ' when he celebrated his 95th birthday , Lieut Col Pawson who was born at Ballincolling , Cork , in 1837 , joined the artillery as a trumpeter when he was 12 . He served in the Crimean war and was Balaclava and the siege of Sebatopol . He retired in 1895 , but at the age of 77 , on the outbreak of war he again volunteered at the auxiliary horse depot at Woolwich . Lieut Col John Pawson and the Kings portrait . 9 February 1932
