General Montgomery in Palestine - June 1939. He almost died after nine weeks in hospital of undulent fever and is pictured during recovery propped up in bed on a trestle-table bidding goodbye to friends before being shipped to England. He was examined shortly before the second world war began and was passed "fit for active service". The course of history could have been much different.
