Kiro Gligorov, the first President of The Republic of Macedonia, is seen in Struga August 20, 2009. Gligorov, a veteran politician that helped lead the small Balkan country into independence in the early 90’ passed away at his home at the age of 94, his office said on Monday. Born in 1917, Gligorov was elected as Macedonia’s first president in 1991, after serving for decades as an economist in the ruling bodies of communist Yugoslavia. He served as president until 1999.
