Trucks and a water cannon can be seen in action in a side street of Bernauer Street on the side belonging to East Berlin, 24 September 1961. The People's Police of the GDR began with the eviction of the bordering houses in Bernauer Street and shot with tear gas and water at the watching West Berliners, especially camera operators and photographers. From 13 August 1961, the day of the building of the Berlin Wall, to the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR were separated by the Iron Curtain between West and East.
