MINE DISASTER

Diagram shows the 12- inch escape hole that was drilled Aug. 23, 1963 into the pocket in which two miners have been trapped since Aug. 13 some 331 feet underground at Hazelton, Pa., mine. Two previous attempts (A) had failed. Escape hole will be widened to allow the men to come out. A third miner, Louis Bova, has not been reached. He was trapped apart from the others and has not been heard from since Aug. 20. A 4-inch shaft is being drilled toward him after two earlier such drillings (B) failed. (AP Photo)
