This March 1974 image shows the Geta Alemu family seen here typifying the plight of Ethiopia's landless tenant farmers - illiterate, impoverished and often exploited by the small clique of nobility who own most of the arable farmland. Geta, his wife and their eight children live in a small Tukul hut of stones, cemented with cow dung. They share their sleeping space with sheep and goats. Their staple diet is raq barley and wheat bread pancakes. Their sole luxury a little sugar and coffee. around 65 US Dollars a year is their income. (AP Photo/Andrew Torchia)
