American sailors man sandbag barricades in Shanghai streets . A picture just recieved in London showing American sailors manning circular sandbag barricades at one of the entrances to the international settlement in Shanghai . Taken just before the situation assumed the serious aspect it now bears , prior to the actual declaration of war , it was yet thought neccessary by the American authorities to be prepared for any emergency call in the protection of their interests and those of the settlement . These sandbag fortresses were erected at every entrance to the settlement and manned by a handful of armed sailors . 5 February 1932
