Coniston Waters, Lancashire: Flames roar out from the jet outlet of Donald Campbell's speedboat Bluebird, as white-coated mechanics carry out turbine tests on the shore at Coniston. Reportedly conditions on Coniston Waters were ideal for 36-year-old Campbell to make practice runs today. Thursday has been set as the day when he will attempt to crack his own world's water speed record of 216.2 mph. Campbell will race over a measured kilometre (1093 yards), which he hopes to cover in about ten seconds. 19th September 1956
