IRA BOMBS EXPLODE ON A LONDON BRIDGE Two bombs which exploded on Hammersmith Bridge, London, in the early hours of the morning caused severe damage to the bridge and shattered thousands of windows in buildings over a wide area. The explosions occurred just after lorry had passed over the bridge. At one part of the bridge, footpath and parapet were blown up. Elsewhere, steel girders were twisted, steel chains smashed and lamp standards wrecked. Officers of Scotland Yard's Special Branch arrived to carry out investigations and two men were later detained for questioning. The explosions are believed to be the work of terrorists of the Irish Republican Army. Men responsible for previous outrages have just received heavy prison sentences, some as long as 17 years, in English courts.
