HE PLANS TO SAIL ROUND THE WORLD ON HOME - MADE BOAT Man who hopes to fulfil a dream of 11 years ago , is Vladimir Vestanowitch , who is planning to sail around the world in home made boat . His craft is the Orlan , a tiny all - steel Bermuda rigged sloop of his own design, made by himself and now lying in the Old Parish Dock at Portished ( Somerset ) . The Orlan has a circular hatchway like the conning tower of a submarine in place of the usual helm smart cockpit . Vladimir's heavy weather plans are simple . He will drop a sea anchor , crawl below and seal himself in by closing the circular water - tight cover behind him . There he will stay until the weather eases enough for him to come out and put on sail again . He is taking with him enough food for six months and 80 gallons of fresh water . As soon as he has put the finishing touches to the rigging of the Orlan , he will cast off for South America on the first stretch of his round- the - world voyage .
