Clouds of tear gas can be seen at the Berlin Wall in Bernauer Street on 24 September 1961. The People's Police of the GDR began with the eviction of the bordering houses in Bernauer Street and shot at the watching West Berliners, especially camera operators and photographers with tear gas and water. From 13 August 1961, the day of the building of the Berlin Wall, to the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989 the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR were separated by the Iron Curtain between West and East.
