FILES-ARGENTINA-BARENBOIM-PALESTINIAN

(FILES) Argentine-born Israeli pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim smiles to the public from the stage installed 31 December 2006 at 9 de Julio Avenue in Buenos Aires, before the start of a tango concert with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Colon Theater. Barenboim, a controversial figure for his vocal opposition to Israeli policies in the Palestinian territories, has taken Palestinian citizenship and said he believed his rare new states could serve as a model for peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Barenboim made the remarks after a concert 12 January 2007 in the West bank city of Ramallah, where he has actively been promoting contact between Israeli and Palestinian musicians for years.
