TAIWAN MAGAZINE RAID

Director of the National Security Bureau Tsai Chao-ming explains to media why the bureau had requested prosecutors to raid offices of Next Weekly magazine early Wednesday during a late afternoon briefing, March 20, 2002, in Taipei. Tsai told reporters that the bureau confiscated and banned the magazine's upcoming issue that reports on secret government funds allegedly used by former President Lee Teng-hui. Tsai explained that the reporting was a breach of national security and the released information "reveals international cooperation networks and threatens the security of our employees."
