Edward W. Brooke and Endicott Peabody

Edward W. Brooke, left, was sworn as Attorney General of Massachusetts by Governor Endicott Peabody, Jan. 16, 1963. Brooke, a republican, is the first Black elected to the office of Attorney General in any state. The oath of office took place at the state house in Boston before a crowd which taxed the capacity of the Massachusetts House Chamber. (AP Photo/Bill Chaplis)
