Hounsou received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his role as nominees were announced during ceremonies December 18 in Beverly Hills. Hounsou is a native of Benin, West Africa, and is currently living in Los Angeles. "Amistad" received four Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Director-Motion Picture for Steven Spielberg.
