Aug. 09, 1963 - Million Pound Train Robbery: A gang of 30 armed, masked men held up the Royal Mail train at Cheddington, Bucks, by means of a false signal yesterday, overpowered the crew, uncoupled the diesel engine and two coaches, drove them down the line to a bridge where a lorry was waiting, and stole the mail. Although it will be some days before the value of the haul is known, it is thought that it may be as high as ?2,000,000 as the train was carrying large parcels of old banknotes going to the Bank of England to be destroyed, also diamonds going to Hatton Garden. Photo shows The interior of one of the coaches that the money was taken from, showing the borken glass on the floor where the raiders broke in. The money was in the cupboards.
