Trucks and a water cannon in action in a side street of the Bernauer Street on the side of East Berlin on 24 September 1961. The People's Police of the GDR began with the eviction of bordering houses in Bernauer Street and shot at the watching West Berliners, especially camera operators and photographers, with tear gas and water. From 13 August 1961, the day of the building of the Berlin Wall, to the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR were separated by the Iron Curtain between West and East.
