GREECE-ACROPOLIS-WONDERS-FILE

(FILES) A file photo taken 01 January 2007 shows fireworks exploding over the ancient temple of Parthenon on the Acropolis hill in Athens. The winners of an internet poll to pick seven "new" wonders of the world, which has upset cultural experts, are due to be revealed 07 July 2007 in Lisbon after some 70 million voters took part, according to the organizers. The privately-sponsored campaign was the brainchild of Swiss filmmaker and museum curator Bernard Weber following the destruction of Afghanistan's giant Buddha statues at Bamiyan by the Taliban in 2001. The 10 frontrunners comprise the Acropolis in Greece, the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza in Mexico, the Coliseum in Rome, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Great Wall of China, the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu, Petra in Jordan, the statues on Easter Island, Britain's Stonehenge and the Taj Mahal in India.
