WRECKED SHIP IS BEING TOWED TOWARDS THE CANARY ISLANDS

MAD02:LAS PALMAS,SPAIN,19DEC97 - The stern section of the Panama-flagged container vessel MSC Carla is being towed to the Canary Islands. The MSC Carla broke in two in heavy seas off the Azores on November 25, and the forepart sank, including a container carrying some medical equipment with radioactive components. France's IPSN nuclear safety agency had said that the heavily-protected equipment with radioactive Caesium-137 components would have no impact on the marine environment, and the Portuguese government also said the radioactive deposits "do not pose significant health risks for the population" (in the Azores).
