POLICEMAN'S 'BOBBY BEACON' TALKS ROAD SENSE TO CHILDREN The Children of Farnworth, Lancashire, are being introduced to an amusing new teacher - named 'Bobby Beacon' by the Police. Newest aid in teaching road safety, 'Bobby' is a talking traffic beacon invented and constructed in quantity by Police Constable J. Gardner of Farnworth. With a friendly globular face, 'Bobby' can look around and utter wise counsel such as 'Look left', 'Look right' and 'Now cross over'. The talking beacon is worked by electric motors and an amplifier, the live instructor using a microphone. 'Bobby Beacon' is being used in Farnworth during Pedestrian Crossing Week (April 3 to April 9) in which more than a thousand local authorities throughout Britain are campaigning to make people road safety conscious. PICTURE SHOWS : The children obey when 'Bobby Beacon' says 'Look left' and suits his action to the words. Behind, operating the beacon is Police Constable A.E. FALLON, Police Road Safety Officer. 3 April 1949
