In the early 1980's China imposed a strict "one-child" policy in an effort to keep the country's population below 1.3 billion by the turn of the century. A recent survey found that one-third of a family's disposable income was spent on the child, as parents indulged his or her every whim. Of the surveued children, none would admit to being spoilt, despite a list of presents with included Nike shoes, computers and CD players, articles usually availabe only to the priviliged in China. U.N. designated July 11 as World Population Day. nb/Photo by Natalie Behring REUTERS
